Freedom of Want

I have selected this picture because it shows a happy family coming together for dinner. The feature that is most intriguing to me n this picture is the fact that they are having a big turkey for dinner. Not just enough food to get by. This is a great example of Consumerism because they don't need the big turkey, but they want one and they can afford that because of the GI bill. Also this shows how happy people were and how they all enjoyed coming together as a family. It is fair to judge that this picture represents life in the 1950s because it was a very happy time because people were making families and could afford things that they wanted. the Pursuit of happiness is a good core democratic value that is being conveyed because they are all happy they have a nice big turkey they can afford and have to eat. however, I believe that life has drastically changed since then because the U.S is in debt and so are many Americans and life isn't as happy anymore because getting a job and having a home and sustaining a family is tougher now with this economy. I feel that life is still good for the majority of the U.S including the middle and upper class. jobs are scarce but if you have the right education, you can reach any goal. This painting was painted when times were a lot simpler. Therefor comparing this picture to now would be tough.
